Take in the historic sights of the expansive ruins that comprise Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, a collection of ancient capitals whose ruins reveal huge cities, magnificent palaces and amazing Buddhist temples full of ancient murals, statues and carvings. As you slowly cycle, you'll pass ancient tanks whose beauty is reflected by the dry zone forests and woodland at its borders that are alive with cheeky monkeys and plentiful bird life. Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa's wealth of historical sights are better explored by bike since you'll be able to cover more ground in a day than on foot. Your cycle trails, away from main roads, will take you to additional historical and cultural sights, through open dry plains, vast coconut plantations and even past a national park or two!
If you are a fit and reasonably experienced rider then you'll find travelling the hills by mountain bike the perfect way to explore its exciting terrain. Puff up steep slopes and whiz down into lush valleys as you twist and turn your way through magnificently green tea plantations, meander past breathtaking lakes and waterfalls whilst enjoying the fresh salubrious climate of the higher mountain areas. If you are not so experienced a cyclist you can still enjoy the beauty of the hills by going on specially selected routes that won't involve so many strenuous climbs!
Cycle the myriad of exciting trails that take you from the glorious coastal regions and right into the heart of Sri Lanka's sugar cane production. As you peddle your way through little villages, alongside rivers and Dutch canals and through large plantations of coconut, tea and rubber, watch out for roaming buffalo, land monitors and other animals likely to stray into your path making your trip more of an adventure. Marvel at the ever-changing scenery that flanks these gently undulating trails as you peddle persistently on!
